Great News for Writers (there is no money in it)
One interesting thing about writing in 2015 is that for the great majority of us, there is no money in it. Music is much the same thing. And photography. And a bunch of other stuff. I think this is really great news. It does not tempt us to confuse our motives, compromise our art, go commercial or sell out. If we have something to say, a song to share or a pic to post, we can share it without regard to personal remuneration (because that is not coming). This frees us to write what we want, when we want, how we want. Just for the joy of it. Just because it is in us. Just because we must. There are no editors, producers, deadlines, timelines or bookstore lines. We don’t have to sign, cower, wheel or deal. We are free! There are three things I would like to share as I close: 1) Cyberspace is a great museum for your art. So fill it up with your very best 2) Don’t quit your day job 3) Don’t quit your day job.
